Junior Friends

Junior Friends is a book club for young children who patron Hawkes Library.  Led by Nanci Hendrix, the members meet once a month, throughout the school year, to appreciate their common reading experiences.

At each meeting, the K-8th grade students tell about a book they read during the prior month, while learning about a new genre of literature.  Craft projects, games, songs, and readings are often on the schedule for this special group of young learners.  Each of the children enjoy the atmosphere that Hawkes Library offers and have come to appreciate the historical significance of the building.

The children find a source of pride in signing their names on traditional cards to check out titles.  It is common to hear a club member mentioning the other people who have checked out books before them.  Often, the name of an adult present in the library will be found on the lines above the child's name.

During the summer reading club, meetings are held once a week.  This years theme is "Reading with the River Critters" and early registration is strongly advised.

Hawkes library encourages the youth in our community to appreciate their history, utilize the resources of the library, and learn the value and enjoyment that reading offers each of us.
